Blue is the Warmest Colour - La vie d'Adèle [2013] Abdellatif Kechiche

A stunningly performed, alternative coming of age story from Tunisian/French director Kechiche. A young girl struggles to come to terms with her sexuality in both youth and adulthood.

The two lovers, Adele Exarchopouos and Lea Seydoux are remarkable. Seems, however, that neither liked working with Kechiche and will not do so again.  Such an intimate film; intense and powerful.

Kechiche's use/overuse of the 'close up' was a little disconcerting and distracting at times but never overshadowed this wonderfully crafted story.  The love scenes have been vehemently criticised by Julie Maroh, the writer of the graphic novel from which the story was drawn. In essence, she felt they were portrayed from the perspective of a heterosexual male, not that of a lesbian woman. Certainly explicit and perhaps overly long...? But, in a film that lasts 3 hours 7 minutes, I guess you can get away with that. 'Blue' certainly tours a spectrum of emotions and feelings that is truly dizzying and comes highly recommended.
